The Story of This Piece

Quiet Perch

The most distinctive quality of this pot lies in its glaze.

Across the soft white ground, muted tones of red, violet, brown, and green settle into the surface with gentle variation. Some areas appear clear and defined, while others soften into mist-like transitions, giving the landscape a depth that changes as the vessel is turned.

These subtle shifts are difficult to reproduce exactly. Even with the same glaze materials, decoration, and firing conditions, small differences in application and kiln atmosphere can alter the final colour, texture, and movement of the surface. Each firing therefore produces its own balance of clarity, softness, and tonal variation.

A small bird rests among slender branches and red berries on one side, while distant mineral-toned hills unfold around the reverse. The blue patterned inner border and narrow gilt rim quietly frame the composition.

Quiet Perch is valued not only for its imagery, but for a glaze surface whose character cannot be completely repeated.
