The Story of This Piece

Quiet Chamber

This hexagonal pot unfolds like a small painted handscroll, with each side revealing a different scene.

Figures, inscriptions, vessels, fans, books, and other domestic objects are arranged across the white porcelain surface with generous open space between them. Rather than forming one continuous landscape, the decoration is divided into individual vignettes, encouraging the viewer to turn the pot and discover each side separately.

The restrained white ground allows the soft coral, blue, green, yellow, and brown enamels to remain clear and delicate. Fine lines define the figures and objects, while subtle variations in colour and brushwork preserve the character of the painted surface.

An iron red geometric band follows the angular rim and is repeated on the six feet below, giving structure and rhythm to the otherwise light composition. The contrast between the formal hexagonal body and the informal scenes creates a pot that feels both composed and quietly personal.

A central drainage hole and four smaller auxiliary openings support drainage, airflow, and anchoring during planting.

Quiet Chamber brings together architecture, painting, and private life within a single compact vessel, offering a different view from every side.
