The Story of This Piece

Fish Moving Through a Dark Current

This round bonsai pot has a broad, flared profile, rising from three small feet toward a gently extended rim. Its compact base and widening walls create a grounded but open form, suitable for presenting a tree without competing with the composition above it.

The exterior is covered in a deep black glaze, providing a dark ground for the fully hand-painted fish decoration. Different species and silhouettes move around the vessel in warm reddish-brown tones, accompanied by small bubbles and scattered aquatic details. Some fish are rendered with delicate scales and fins, while others appear in looser, quieter outlines.

As the pot is turned, the individual fish form a continuous underwater scene. Their varied directions and spacing prevent the decoration from feeling repetitive, creating a sense of slow movement across the black surface.

The interior contrasts with the exterior through a softly mottled sandy glaze, framed by a black inner border and a narrow gold-coloured line around the rim. This warmer interior gives the vessel greater depth while preserving the restrained character of the overall palette.

Hand-thrown and fully hand-painted, the pot retains subtle variations in its circular profile, glaze texture and brushwork. A central drainage opening and three smaller holes support practical bonsai use, while the dark exterior and understated fish imagery give the piece a calm, distinctive presence.
