The Story of This Piece

This shallow oval pot has a broad planting surface and a low, restrained profile. Its gently raised rim follows the continuous oval shape, while four low feet lift the base slightly and preserve the pot’s calm horizontal character.

Around the exterior, underglaze colour decoration presents a loosely arranged garden scene. Dark blue flowers, soft green leaves, warm yellow fruits or blossoms, and a small bird appear at intervals rather than forming a dense continuous pattern. The open spaces between these elements give the decoration a light and unhurried rhythm.

Blue calligraphy and a small red seal occupy one section of the wall, adding another visual layer without disturbing the simplicity of the composition. Because the motifs change as the pot is turned, each viewing angle reveals a different balance of flowers, foliage, inscription, and bird imagery.

A deep blue line defines the rim, with matching blue applied to the feet below. These darker details frame the pale glazed body and give the shallow form a clear outline. Inside, the largely undecorated surface keeps attention on the planting while multiple drainage and tie-down holes provide practical support.

Its low oval shape makes the pot especially suited to compositions that benefit from a wide, quiet foundation. The restrained garden imagery brings colour and movement while leaving sufficient visual space for the tree to remain central.
