The Story of This Piece

Elegant Pastime

This low oval pot brings together calligraphy, colour, and quiet symbolism within a restrained form.

A blue inscription moves across one side of the vessel, expressing the traditional idea of refined leisure as a way of cultivating the mind. Around the remaining surface, small painted motifs appear gradually as the pot is turned: a bird, leaves, gourds, and objects associated with study and everyday enjoyment.

The pale celadon ground gives the decoration a soft and spacious setting. Deep cobalt defines the rim and feet, creating a strong visual frame, while touches of blue, ochre, green, and red add warmth without overwhelming the composition.

Its shallow oval body is particularly suited to compositions that benefit from a broad horizontal profile. Two main drainage holes and several smaller auxiliary openings support drainage, airflow, and anchoring during planting.
