Across the Sea, Each Reveals a Gift

This large oval bonsai pot presents the traditional story of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, painted as a continuous scene around the exterior.

Each figure appears with a distinct posture, garment and symbolic object. One travels upon a donkey, while others move through the curling waves carrying staffs, instruments or personal attributes. Rather than arranging the figures into a single frontal image, the painter allows the narrative to unfold gradually around the vessel. Turning the pot reveals the story one passage at a time.

Layered blue waves connect the individual scenes and bring movement to the lower half of the composition. Above them, generous areas of white glaze give the figures room to breathe, preventing the detailed painting from feeling crowded. Fine iron-red lines and floral scrolls decorate the wide rim and feet, quietly framing the more expressive imagery below.

The inscription refers to the familiar saying associated with the tale: each immortal crosses the sea by revealing a different ability. It is an idea of individuality, resourcefulness and finding one’s own way forward.

Its broad flared rim gives the pot a generous, open presence, while the low oval body remains visually grounded. The interior is kept largely undecorated, allowing the planted tree and surrounding soil surface to remain the visual centre.

Because the scene is painted by hand, subtle differences in line, expression and colour naturally remain within the finished work. These variations preserve the movement of the brush and give the pot the character of an individual painted object rather than a mechanically repeated design.
