The Story of This Piece

Dragon Among the Waves

This tripod pot brings together the strength of coarse stoneware and the movement of a traditional dragon and wave composition.

The exterior is painted in deep blue with rolling waves, rising peaks, drifting clouds, and a dragon that gradually reveals itself as the vessel is turned. The decoration follows the rounded body continuously, allowing each viewing angle to present a different part of the scene.

Unlike the smooth refinement of porcelain, the coarse stoneware body retains a more grounded and tactile character. Fine particles and subtle irregularities remain visible beneath the glaze, giving the surface a quiet mineral texture and a sense of weight.

The interior is finished in a warm amber glaze with natural speckling and tonal variation. Its colour shifts from golden brown near the rim to deeper earthy tones toward the centre. These changes depend on the clay body, glaze thickness, and firing conditions, so the final surface cannot be reproduced with complete precision.

A narrow ochre edge gently frames the opening, while three decorated feet lift the pot from the surface. A central drainage hole and several smaller auxiliary openings support drainage, airflow, and anchoring during planting.

Dragon Among the Waves balances the energy of its painted imagery with the restrained, earthy presence of coarse stoneware.
