The Story of This Piece

A Quiet Journey Through Mountains and Water

This round bonsai pot rises from a compact foot into gently flared walls and a broad, outward-turning rim. The open profile gives the vessel a generous presence, while the narrow gold-coloured line around the rim introduces a restrained warmth against the cool blue-and-white palette.

A continuous hand-painted landscape unfolds across the exterior. Dense trees and layered cliffs occupy one side of the composition, gradually opening into calm water, distant mountains and small architectural forms. Rather than presenting a single fixed viewpoint, the scene reveals itself slowly as the pot is turned.

Among the wider landscape is a small boat carrying a lone fisherman. The figure is modest in scale, allowing the surrounding mountains and water to remain dominant. This relationship between the solitary traveller and the expansive setting brings a quiet sense of distance and contemplation to the decoration.

The cobalt brushwork moves between dark, concentrated passages and pale washes of blue. Fine branches, rocky surfaces and distant shorelines are balanced by areas of open white space, giving the landscape depth without making the pot feel visually crowded.

The foot is finished with additional blue geometric and wave-like decoration, connecting the base to the painted scene above. Hand-thrown and fully hand-painted, the pot retains subtle variations in its form and brushwork that reflect the process of its making.
